Took a break? Your Muscles Haven’t Forgotten 💪 – SHAF Coaching Newsletter

Happy Humpday

Let’s talk about something that happens to all of us, no matter how motivated or disciplined we are: setbacks.

Maybe it was a vacation, an injury, a stressful period at work, or just life being life. You missed a few workouts… then a few more… and suddenly, your once-strong body feels like it’s taken five steps back.

I’ve been there too. But here’s the good news (backed by science): your muscles remember.

The Science of Muscle Memory 🧠

When you train consistently, your muscle cells grow not just in size but also in nuclei—the control centers of the cell. These nuclei don’t just disappear when you stop training. They stick around, sometimes for years, ready to help your muscles bounce back faster when you start again.

This process is known as muscle memory, and it’s not a myth.

Studies have shown that after a break, people who previously trained can regain their strength and size much faster than beginners—even after months (or more) off. Your nervous system also remembers how to move, lift, and stabilize, which makes coordination and performance come back faster, too.

So… You Took a Break. Now What?

Here’s the deal: breaks aren’t failure. They’re part of the process.

Progress is never linear. Life will always throw curveballs. What matters most is how you respond. And knowing your body is actually on your side—ready to rebuild faster than before—can be incredibly empowering.

So if you’re coming back from a break, start where you are. Let go of the guilt. Don’t chase old numbers on Day 1. Focus on showing up, rebuilding the habit, and letting your body do what it’s designed to do: adapt and remember.

You’re not starting over—you’re picking up where you left off, with a shortcut built in.

Keep going. Your body’s got this. So do you.
